Edge & Flow

I fell in love with the whole pretty dress, roughed up boots look in the 90’s. I was in high school (a dreadful ultra orthodox nunnery) from ‘92 to ‘96 so the fashion at that time imprinted hard. Grunge style and heroin chic (a gross term) were predominant alongside the amazing Seattle rock scene. It somehow became acceptable to wear something feminine as long as there was a beat up element to it. Like if Winona Ryder and Claire Danes could wear this then so could I. That’s often how the teenage mind works; we aim to get closer to our favorite stars by emulating their style. There were no iPhones, no tik tok, and no social media. I got all my fashion inspo from stacks of actual magazines and MTV. The 90’s gave us some great looks while others should probably stay in yesteryear. The pretty, flowy dress with motorcycle boots is a look I love to this day. It’s also a great outfit in more modest spaces; since this is a boob dress I’ll put a cute sweater over it to make it appropriate for synagogue. A dress like this is year round, I just add tights or fishnets during colder months. I have had these Jimmy Choo boots for maybe 15 years and they only get better with time. The more “experienced” they get the cooler they are. Like Winona and Claire.

Essential Pieces

Consider this look a list of pieces that are essential in any wardrobe:

A boyfriend blazer
Curve hugging, flared jeans
Cute belt
Good boots with a chunky heel
Layered necklaces
The perfect tee
Cool hat

Let’s break this down a bit. So my blazer is navy tweed from J. Crew. I absolutely love it. It’s a great item that is the perfect outerwear during transitional seasons. It looks great over at shirt, turtleneck, button down, or even the right kind of dress. I always feel good when I reach for this blazer, and I love how neutral the navy is. My jeans are from Free People. I love bell bottoms, and this pair hugs and holds me well. I will never wear uncomfortable anything, especially in the denim department. There’s enough stretch in this pair and the denim is light enough that it doesn’t feel stiff and oppressive. The tee was a random purchase I bought in a few colors. A perfect t shirt IMHO is light, soft, a bit worn in, feels amazing on my skin, and has the right neckline and sleeves. I never know until I try it on. I like the color of this tee, and I’ve been loving anything in shades of neutral and brown.

My cute belt is maybe 20 years old. It’s tie fabric from J. Crew. It has just enough detail to compliment my outfit without screaming to be noticed. These boots are cream colored with a chunky heel. They are so comfortable and they are a nice departure from basic back boots. This is my favorite hat from my hat closet. I think it’s from a shop called City Hats (or something like that) near Houston St. in downtown NYC. I was driving past the store, saw the amazing hats in the window, and stopped to get out immediately. I got to choose the ribbon and the feather combo. I love how the bright red and purple (my two favorite colors in preschool) feathers work so well off the neutral hat base. I totally get why the whole big hat thing gets parodied, but this one just makes me happy and always does its job. Yes, these hats can look stupid (especially at night) but they can also look rad.

Chic, practical, and versatile wardrobe essentials will serve you well for years to come. They are investments in how we show up on an average day and are an incentive to take off the sweatpants. I always feel good in a solid, put together street look, and repurposing each of these pieces feels good too.

Black Slip Power

Ah, the power of a slip dress, especially in noir. It’s so cool that clothing formerly worn exclusively in the bedroom can be taken into the streets with the right accessories and attitude. Stay tuned for next week where I show how I styled this classic piece from private to public with a couple of easy add ons. A beautiful, luxurious slip dress makes for extra special date nights at home or out on the town. I felt glamorous and feminine getting ready for a special night out; it’s lovely to pregame in a beautiful setting in a beautiful slip. A pink, red, or nude lip is the facial highlight. Not much else is needed when the dress is bringing the fire. This dress is an extremely versatile layering piece: an over sized sweater, blazer, duster, knotted button down, or kimono are some ideas for turning this into an instant outfit. The right jewelry and shoe completes the look, and there are many options for both. Don’t bury your slip since even when paired with other elements since it’s still deserving of attention. Layer it but don’t lose it, it’s too important. Like you.
I feel I must point out that a few years ago I’d NEVER have worn something like this, for several sad reasons. I’m bringing this up because I’m sure many of you are thinking the same thing and I totally get it. It took me years to bring sexy back and even more years to write about it or wear it publicly. For me, feeling this way is essential to my womanhood and it’s a way to honor that part of my being, even if it’s just for me. The way we feel inside is what we give energetically, and the more alive and passionate I feel the more I can enjoy life give of it in various ways. It’s not necessarily about “sexy”, it’s about being awake in every aspect of life. This, for me, is the most beautiful thing to take from inside to out.

Copper Mood

I am in love with shades of brown, bronze, and copper this season. I updated my wardrobe with some good key pieces in this lush, warm color palette, mostly in silk. A couple of dresses and a pants outfit have been recent additions. This whole vibe just grabbed me recently. I feel like a walking ad for pumpkin spice whatever and I’m not mad about it. Bronze is such a stunning alternative to typical New York holiday black. This dress is both beautiful to host in (just stay out of the kitchen!) and wear as a guest to a special dinner. The neutral heels feel fresh and makes this a beautiful look for Spring too. I love the flattering ruched waist, inviting neckline, and flowy sleeves. The slit and movement of the fabric are delicious, as is pretty the back detail. This look is super feminine, edible even. It’s nice to keep things yummy and warm as the weather gets colder and harsher. The holidays are such a special time, and I find they’re that much more enjoyable when I’m wearing something I truly love.

Tops & Tails

A classic, tailored tuxedo is one of my favorite cocktail looks. With holiday season officially upon us, I’m dusting off some of my fave party style ideas. This suit is almost 15 years old. It holds up beautifully, as well made classics do. It is Theory from a collaboration they did with Olivier Theyskens. I absolutely love this suit. It’s sexy menswear at its best, especially when paired with a fierce yet feminine lace edged silk cami. Strong and delicate. Messy, rock n roll hair always looks cool contrasted with a tailored look, it lightens the mood and takes the seriousness down a notch. The neutral heels were actually a mistake. I initially planned on wearing black stilettos and I forgot to change my shoes in the middle of the shoot. I realized I liked this shoe as well, since it breaks up the black and chills out the matchy matchy vibe. Each part of this suit is highly versatile on its own, making it even more of an investment. Cheers to getting the most use out of our outfits!

Dogs on Parade!

My girls went to the 32nd annual Halloween Dog Parade at Tompkins Square Park this weekend. There is literally nothing I could be wearing right now that’s more entertaining than this, so I had to share these fabulous pics that my daughter took for this week’s Style. I love everything about this for all the obvious reasons. The creativity, hilarity, tremendous dedication towards joy and, and the commitment to having wholesome fun when there’s so much heaviness in the atmosphere. I’m in awe of the time, creativity, and effort that went into creating these adorable costumes. How wonderful to use our pets as a reason to be playful, proud, and celebratory. It’s so terrific that this has been going on for 32 years in downtown NYC, and I love that my girls and their friends made plans to attend. This to me is classic New York; whimsical, fun, expressive, and being all in. I especially love when the pet parents also dress up so it’s all on theme (check out that Game of Thrones concept below!). I’m nuts about the 2 train conductors, like I can’t even. The specialty vehicles that were created were fabulous, and I looked on Instagram for more pics cuz I couldn’t get enough. What a wonderful use of energy and positivity. This is the stuff of life.

Colors I’ll Be Wearing This Season

How yummy and enticing are the new colors for this season? Deep, delicious jewel tones in marigold, emerald, teal, purple, and red are a few of my new faves. Worn in head to toe monochrome, as a statement piece, or paired with a neutral, pulling from this color palette is a sure way to add pop and relevance to your Fall/Winter wardrobe. Purses, tights, and shoes are also great ways to incorporate color, especially for my friends who go no further than navy, black, beige, or gray. Use this color chart to see what individual colors or pairings speak to you. Maybe there’s a bold color you’ve been too shy to try that you can invite into this season. Have fun exploring ways to expand sweater weather:).

Designing Small Flower Arrangements

I hope you enjoy this little flower arranging tutorial as much as I do. With the seasons changing, the Jewish holidays approaching, back to school gatherings, or whatever else you’ve got going on, it’s fun and satisfying to take a DIY crack at decorative florals. Using the ideas here as a jump off point, I’ll play around with colors, textures, and shapes to create arrangements that compliment my table design. I like this particular tutorial because I’ll often buy a larger centerpiece from my florist and then create smaller, coordinating arrangements to scatter along the rest of the table and buffets. I suggest watching this before buying your materials so you are familiar with the necessary sizing, amounts, etc, then rewatching it once you’ve gathered everything. It’s so much fun to enjoy the fruits and flowers of your homemade custom arrangements. Happy arranging!

When Colors Pair & Pop

I love when colors unexpectedly pair well, and I extra love this combo of Royal blue and neon orange. I call these my traffic cone shoes, and they are a statement unto themselves. A strong, sleek color duo is a quick way to give a look zing, substance, and personality. This silk jumpsuit with the delicate nude shoulder detail
gets a fun accessory in the shoe alone. It’s minimalistic dressing with a bold twist. The jumpsuit and low pumps are conservative in their shape and silhouette, but become extra in their colors. This concept is a great way for more conservative dressers to express themselves; take a classic shape and make it fun with a bold color or pattern. This look works so well transitionally as we move from Summer to Fall. The vibrancy and lighter textures of summer with a full piece jumpsuit and a closed toe shoe.

Feeding Each Other

This sweet dress from Love Shack Fancy was one of my summer chillax go to’s. Light, short, and so breezy it’s barely there. Plaid is a nice break from ubiquitous summer florals, and the smocked off the shoulder detail made for a super cute day look. I picked up this fun hat at Anthropologie a few years ago, and my necklace from Free People has been an almost daily staple this summer. It’s one of those easy necklaces that has layers all in one. It’s made of neutral tones so it goes with pretty much everything. This look is summer personified: a little sundress, straw hat, and an easy accessory.
The most beautiful things in these photos are my magnificent koi fish. I’m fortunate to have a beautiful pond in my yard with dozens of gorgeous koi. Feeding them has become one of my favorite daily tasks. I started feeding them myself this summer (as opposed to asking another member of the household to do it) because I was not spending enough time on the part of the property. This really bothered me because I knew I was depriving myself of this particular connection to nature. Once I “officially” took on the task to feed the fish my whole mood, and relationship to my property, changed and developed. It not only felt good to take responsibility for nourishing and attending to my own fish (as it does when we do the same for ourselves), but I relished in walking down to this beautiful area and giving myself daily time to sit amongst nature. Feeling my feet kiss the earth, listening to the fish instinctively rise to the surface as they heard my footsteps, watching the feeding frenzy, checking on my nearby vegetable garden, and breathing in summer with all its sensory experiences truly enhanced my relationship to myself, this amazing season, the fish, my land, and to the present moment. It’s a big source of aggravation when I’m disappointed in myself for not fully utilizing my surroundings. I don’t like letting myself down by not taking advantage of what the present has to offer, so it ate at me that I wasn’t in proper relationship to this particular gift of nature in my own backyard. It’s crazy what is right under our noses that gets overlooked or under appreciated. So much passes us by until we decide to genuinely pay attention. It’s a radical choice to stop, look, listen, and breathe.

I fed the fish but the fish fed me, as did the moist grass, the crickets, my garden, the light hitting the trees and plants in soft stripes, the breeze on my skin, the deep appreciation for the instant medicine of nature, and the connection to all of humankind throughout time who have drawn from these very same beautiful pleasures.

Back to Nature

I wait all year for summer gardening. I love being barefoot in the dirt, checking on my plants, and savoring the delight I feel when something is ready to be picked. Cooking with what I grow is the icing on the cake.
I continue to move towards a natural, lighter color palette during hotter seasons. This year’s heat wave has me in wispy, gauzy fabrics and colors as much as possible. My ivory headband keeps my hair cute and off my face, and my neutral beaded necklace from Free People has been my go to summer accessory. There’s nothing like a sweet little cream top to embody summer. It’s like the lemonade of clothing in what it evokes for me.
I like the heat, and this year has been extreme. All the more reason to wear as little as possible, let my skin breathe, and find cooling in the damp soil and shade in my yard. Daily walks down to my pond to feed my koi fish are a summer highlight. I love to take time to dip my feet in the water and watch the fish glide around. That first covid summer is what reminded me to be present and aware in my surroundings directly in front of me. I had to be reintroduced to the very nature that is literally at my feet. Connecting to nature helps me ground in connection to myself. There is so much beauty to found everywhere; inside, outside, and all around.

Heat Wave

Damn, is this an extreme heat wave!!! Summer decided to go full force this year. She sure is in a MOOD.
So the bikini here is Love Shack Fancy and the glasses are Chloe. The float is from Target. Now that we got that out of the way, this post really isn’t about that. It’s more about how I’ve never done a blog shoot like this before. I’ve posted on Instagram maybe 3 bathing suit shots from vacations over the past 5 years, but I never felt comfortable making it official. There were various reasons for that; mom reasons, community reasons, to name a few. It hit me like 5 minutes ago that I’m over that, which was genuinely liberating. Style, as we know, is only somewhat about clothes. Someone wearing a fabulous outfit will not carry it off if they aren’t owning it from within, just like someone wearing basic jeans and a t shirt will look amazing if they exude confidence. I’m sure we all know people in either direction. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to post pictures like this; everyone has a different comfort level. It’s just that I reached a place where it simply didn’t feel forbidden to me anymore and I wanted to embrace that. You know what’s hot? Releasing constrains and judgements that come from both myself and others. Cooling that shit down is one of my themes this summer. To all things a season.

Jungle Boogie

I love this look. Dare I say I’m channeling Shakira? Neutral and black is always such a good combo; it’s a balance of sharpness and calm. This look makes a sexy summer statement with 3 essential pieces; long, gauzy skirt paired with a crop tank and the right necklace. This outfit easily goes from day to night and is perfect for dinner on vacation. The skirt is so versatile and is a great beach piece because of its fabric and high slits. No blowouts needed; natural, wild hair is kinda a must. That’s the theme here: wild and natural. That’s what summer is about, and I love that it’s a season that reminds me to embrace those qualities. Bring on the heat whenever wherever.

Torch’d x Terez

Hey, Baby, what’s your sign?
Loving my Terez sports bra from the new zodiac collection! I actually can’t stand most athletic fabrics, they give me the willies. I swear this is the most comfortable and supportive bra I’ve ever worn. It fully held me in while I DJ’d like a maniac at the launch party in the Hamptons this week. It fit snugly without being too tight (which drives me and my girls crazy), and let me sweat profusely without it becoming soaking wet (ew). The neon zodiac design is awesome, and I love the message that inspired the line: we may all be born under different signs at different times but we are all deeply connected and share so much in common. Terez as a company is all about giving, community, charity, sisterhood, fun, and supporting one another. It’s a brand I’m proud to wear and proud to work for. This Capricorn Aquarius (I’m a cusp baby) will definitely get lots of use out of all my Terez pieces.

Act Your Age

The trajectory of my life has, in many ways, not been quite linear or typical (whatever that means). I was a wife at 20, a mother at 22, and didn’t start to even begin to contemplate DJing until I was 38. I love how this has worked out so far and I have zero regrets. I know so many people who look back at younger years as the funnest, most alive time they’ve ever experienced. That would scare the crap out of me, feeling that from here on out it’s all a predictable formula. I am constantly grateful to how my path has unfolded thus far. In so many ways I feel more youthful and alive than ever. Life is joyous, exciting, and a beautiful mystery if we allow it to be.
However, because I did in fact assume hugely adult roles at such a young age, which is extremely common in many religious spaces, I aged myself very early in terms of how I viewed most things. One such area where I held judgement towards myself and others was in regards to “age appropriate” clothing (this is a style post after all). My friend, Rachel, once said, “Why is everyone the self appointed Appropriate Police?”. The reasons why I didn’t feel I could wear, say, a bustier tube top when I was 28 are deeper and private, but let’s just say I’d never have worn this outfit when I was much younger in years. Never. Even if I wanted to, which I likely didn’t, I’d have thought that’s not what mothers wear. I distinctly being intensely uncomfortable 7 years ago while considering ripped jeans at Rag&Bone. I thought they were too slutty and definitely not age/mom appropriate. I did wind up buying them and I still love them, but at the time they felt extremely risqué. It’s like nothing was easy, everything had to be weighed and dissected. I also remember that when I first discovered Norma Kamali, I was horrified at some of the sexier pieces the salesperson showed me. As in aghast. She said her Brazilian clients ONLY wore such items, which made me realize that, hold on here, perhaps this is cultural and therefore not set in stone by the Appropriate Police. Perhaps it’s simply perspective, which means it can shift.
Fast Forward to right now, to these photos. I’m rocking a bustier tube top, purple feathered choker, and having the time of my life doing one of the things I love most. That hardened shell of fear, judgement, hesitation, and coloring outside imaginary lines cracked, uncovering a wellspring of inner joy and youth. I look, act, and feel years younger than I have since I was a teenager. Who decided that wearing what makes you glow is inappropriate? When I myself passed such verdicts it’s because I was jealous that I couldn’t/wouldn’t/shouldn’t. Thank god that’s over. Do I want to dress like I’m 12, of course not. I love being a 44 year old woman who carries herself with truth, dignity, light, sensuality, class, authenticity, strength, femininity, and physical embodiment.
Wear your playfulness and joy instead of wondering, where am I in my own life? You won’t get arrested and if you do, I’ll come bail you out.

Faith and Flow

I read the phrase “faith and flow” about a year ago and it’s been something I reach for when I need to self regulate in moments of uncertainty. “Flow” feels good to me, whether using it as a mantra or wearing clothing that supports that feeling. This flowy top has been a favorite for several years. It’s the perfect balance of fabric and exposure. Shoulders are a lovely body part to highlight, they’re always flattering to reveal. Embroidered detail on this gauzy top are an instant mood, and flowy pants or a long skirt is what I pair this with. Loose hair, some jewelry to accessorize, and sandals create an airy, natural look and feel. I love when glamour is effortless; ease is sexy to me.
The background in this room in my home is in one of my favorite areas. Bold black and white, and strong pops of turquoise and yellow with coordinating accents from Target and Home Goods. Since I often host guests in this space, I keep bright coffee table books about travel as a fun touch. Vibrant candles, bud vases, and coasters contribute to the welcoming, cheerful decor. When my guests are comfortable, I’m at peace.

Spotlight Sporty Spice

If you wanna be my lover, ya gotta get with my friends! The 90’s was an amazing time to be an adolescent; IYKYK. I played a big block of 90’s pop at a recent gig so I gleefully channeled some Sporty Spice. It’s fun working with moods, lighting, and era vibes to create an experience for the crowd. I lucked out, since there was a big group who all graduated high school in ‘95 (I’m ‘96) so my set landed perfectly. Janet, Crystal Waters, Technotronic, Madonna, Cathy Dennis, the list of pop hits is endless.
I was also super into the grunge scene in high school, both musically and aesthetically. I remember the night Kurt Cobain killed himself. I was shattered and listened to Courtney Love on the radio all night. No Tik Tok, no Instagram to later scroll through. You caught it live or you missed it forever. MTV was my life growing up in a small New Jersey suburb. It was my outlet to everything. I cannot remember a time in my life that wasn’t completely driven by music, and to have a career in the music industry is such a blessing. I pinch myself regularly and know every moment and musical note that got me here. Live is meant to be lived fully, not endured. It’s full of moments ranging from spicy to sweet to salty to sour. Each part of life has different ingredients and components, and if we mix it all well we hopefully get as many delicious experiences as possible. When I look at these photos and recall my teenage years in my 90’s, I’m grateful for all I hungered for then that led to right now. Love your life’s soundtrack, it’s part of how you uniquely beat in the world.

Food Photography On A Budget

I recently started doing my own food photography. It’s way more convenient for me to photograph as I cook throughout my week, as opposed to the pressure of having to churn out 8 recipes in one shot for a photo shoot. It made the whole process hard to enjoy, which was a shame and definitely not the point. I love to cook, and it’s much nicer to embrace this new organic pace. I have also been joyously discovering that I have new skill sets to learn, be it creating DJ fliers for my feed or photographing food. There are amazing apps that help me feel like a graphic designer and fabulous food photography accounts on Instagram that offer tips and tricks. It’s fun trying new things! I’m certainly not a professional photographer and I’m not trying to be, just like I’m not trying to pass myself off as a professional chef. I’m a great home cook and all around creative who has a good eye; why not expand my wheelhouse? I am a pretty quick study when it comes to aesthetics, and I have always liked experimenting with all sorts of photography. I learned to set up a food shot with accessories in varying textures, heights, complimentary colors, and neutral vessels to showcase the food. I’ve always placed my food on white, black, or wooden serving platters in order to let the food be the star, but I wasn’t quite sure how to fully flesh out a kitchen decor concept to act as a backdrop. Everything seen below is from Target. I had a blast perusing for napkins, platters, bowls, cake plates, drink ware, tablecloths, serving pieces etc. It wasn’t cheap the day of purchase, but this was an investment. I keep all my photography items in a separate closet, and it brings me such joy to peek in and embrace my inner Martha Stewart. Blog or not, I take pride in always setting a beautiful table, and leaning into this endeavor allowed me to up my game. Perfection is never the goal. I’m always looking to create beautifully in a way that’s purely authentic to me. I reuse some combination of these items in every shoot, and I love the challenge of mixing the same things differently, like I do with clothing. There are so many ways to express ourselves creatively.
What’s one thing you’d like to try? Go for it. Make mistakes, leave things on the cutting room floor. This is how we learn, and learning is how we live.

Palm Springs

I have loved vintage since high school. I’d cut class and comb local yard sales looking for anything cool, interesting, campy, or quirky. All my accessories here are vintage DVF and Miu Miu, so they pair well with my retro inspired look. Orange knit pants and a bright paisley tunic work well with the old school wedge shoe, oversized sunglasses in coordinating colors, and statement cuff. I felt very 60’s Palm Springs in this outfit. A good pair of light knit pants is so useful on vacation; on the beach, poolside, or paired with a tank or off the shoulder top for dinner. I’ve also worn these to brunch with an oversized button down. This top is years old from J Crew. It’s light as air so it’s an essential cover up piece. I often pair it with frayed denim shorts. The bright colors are a fun pop of enthusiasm for a new pool season, whether I’m playing hostess or guest.

Style on Deck

As a DJ who exists in various spaces, one of them being style, I always dress in a way that will vibe with the gig. Some clients specifically care about this while it doesn’t occur to others at all. Regardless of whether or not there’s a request for me to dress a certain way, out of respect for the gig, the client, and what the event aims to achieve, I see my outfit as a part of the aesthetic. This is a fun detail that I enjoy giving thought to, whether it’s going all out 80’s for a themed birthday party, classy and feminine for a women’s conference, plaid and leather for a punk/metal event, bright red to match the car themed decor for a child’s party, shimmer as seen here, or cool details like safety pins covering my pants. It’s part of my offering as a DJ to look stylish, fun, appropriate, and glamorous. Yes, I’m there primarily to deliver a great musical set, but any event is a full sensory experience and the visuals matter. I love being in the service industry, and as a detail oriented person it’s natural for me to consider the aesthetics. Since my bottom is mostly unseen, I’ll always make sure the top half of me is serving, including makeup. I almost always wear sparky eyeshadow in colors I normally wouldn’t wear so as to amp up the visible factors. It doesn’t matter if no one is paying attention, that’s not my goal. I see my role as one providing entertainment and how I present myself is an extension of that. My clients will always get the full Lady Blaga experience. It matters how I show up in life, especially if someone is counting on me to set the tone.
