Every morning there is a quick prayer I say with my kids. I'm well aware how grossly self-righteous that sounds, but it's true. On the drive to school we say both the Hebrew and English versions. In Hebrew it's "Modeh Ani..." which basically translates into expressing our utmost gratitude to God for returning our bodies to our souls, thus granting us life for one more day.

I'm grateful for the grateful side of me. I think, and hope, that I'm a person who genuinely is able to express thankfulness. Yes, one can train themselves to mechanically say "thank you", and that's fine up to a point, but when it really comes from the heart, and that feeling of true appreciation allows you to connect with someone else, it is magical.

So I'm on this feverish kick not only to live life to the fullest, but to document it. Having been so shaken to the core by my Mother in Law's untimely passing, I am furiously making and capturing memories for myself and my family. I wish we had more of her life on record. It's a mix of trying to squeeze as much as possible out of the present, while securing our emotional future. As morose as it sounds, there is no way around us simply not knowing how much time we have. We cannot control the length of our lives, though we try so very hard, but we can absolutely control the quality. Hey, I'm too much of a New York Jew to not obsess about death.
